Anyone can create a new country, but unless it is recognized by existing widely recognized nations it is generally termed a micronation. A micronation is a small entity, which self-proclaims to be a country, but whose status as a nation is not accepted by the international community. While micronations can be somewhat serious attempts to create new nations, the vast majority tend to be made as jokes, hobbies, or attractions. Micronations are often short-lived. In some cases lasting only a few weeks before the creators lose interest. They also generally have no, or very little legitimacy to their claim of being an independent nation.
